Hermes Pio-Clementino

Hermes Pio-Clementino

A Roman Sculpture, Neoclassical Period

White marble

A finely carved white marble sculpture depicting Hermes Pio-Clementino, also known as Hermes Belvedere. This figure is a faithful reinterpretation of the ancient Greek statue of Hermes housed in the Pio-Clementino Museum, the largest section of the Vatican Museums.

The original was long misidentified as Antinous, beloved of Emperor Hadrian, due to its placement in the Belvedere Courtyard. However, the draped himation over the shoulder and relaxed contrapposto stance are more accurately attributed to Hermes in classical iconography.

Size: 100 × 40 × 27 cm
