Venus and Mars
French School, 19th Century, After the Antique
Bronze with brown patina, mounted on a marble base
This elegant bronze group represents Venus, goddess of love, and Mars, god of war, united in a moment of intimate repose.
Rendered with classical balance and expressive restraint, the composition is inspired by the celebrated Imperial Roman marble group of Venus and Mars (circa 15 AD), now in the Louvre Museum (inv. MR316).
A fine example of the 19th-century fascination with antique prototypes, this bronze reflects both academic craftsmanship and Romantic idealism.
