A Pair of French Porcelain Greek-Revival Style Vases
France, 19th century
Polychrome porcelain with red-figure classical decoration
This pair of porcelain vases is richly decorated in the style of ancient Greek red-figure pottery, a revival popular in Neoclassical France. The vases are adorned with mythological and ceremonial scenes, finely painted in tones of red and black on a white ground, echoing the aesthetics of Attic vases.
The bodies feature classical figures in motion, while the squared bases are embellished with narrative friezes. Each vase is flanked by handles surmounted by gilt satyr or theatrical masks, adding sculptural richness.
The combination of painted ceramic and applied gilt ornament reflects the 19th-century fascination with antiquity and decorative classicism.
