Bas-Relief Depicting an Equestrian Scene
After the Panathenaic Frieze, Classical Style
Plaster and fibre composite, high relief
Dimensions: H. 104 cm × W. 121 cm
Condition: Visible damages and losses
This striking high-relief panel, cast in plaster and fibre, depicts a rider on horseback, inspired by the Panathenaic procession frieze from the Parthenon in Athens, one of the most iconic masterpieces of Classical Greek sculpture (ca. 447–432 BC).
Executed in a style faithful to antique prototypes, the composition reflects the elegance, rhythm, and naturalism characteristic of Phidias’ workshop. Such reproductions were popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries for educational, decorative, and neoclassical interior purposes.
