Bronze Statue of Dionysus

Small Patinated Bronze Statue of Dionysus

France, 19th century

An elegant patinated bronze sculpture of young Dionysus (Bacchus in Roman mythology), god of wine, vegetation, and inspiration.

The youthful figure is depicted nude and relaxed, draped with a chlamys (short cloak) over one shoulder, and leaning nonchalantly on a tree trunk, a typical motif in classical and neoclassical compositions.

The work displays fine anatomical rendering and a serene facial expression, characteristic of 19th-century academic bronzes.

It is set on a cylindrical base of veined red marble, atop a square pedestal in black marble.

Likely inspired by a famous antique model, this piece reflects the neoclassical taste of the Grand Tour era, combining elegance with scholarly appreciation of antiquity.

Dimensions:

• Height of the sculpture: 48.5 cm

• Total height with base: 74.5 cm
